Permanent teeth are strong and enduring, but not completely indestructible. Variables like decay, gum disease and accidental injuries can cause extensive tooth damage. If the damage is beyond repair, you may need to have these teeth removed. Extraction is a last resort when other dental treatments fail to resolve serious dental issues. Dr. Drew Boyd from Urgent Dental of Denver is your go-to dentist for extractions in the Denver, Colorado area.
The following FAQs explain more about tooth extractions:
We recommend extraction for the following reasons:
If your tooth or teeth are causing extreme pain or are putting healthy teeth at risk, an emergency tooth extraction may be needed to remedy your situation without delay.
The extraction process is done using local anesthetic to keep you comfortable and pain-free. Once the anesthesia wears off, you may feel pain, gum soreness, swelling or bleeding. You can take OTC or prescription medication to ease these symptoms. You should feel better within a few days to a week.
It’s important to note that tooth extractions are routine procedures. After an evaluation, Dr. Boyd will determine whether you need a simple or surgical extraction. We’ll numb your mouth for both types of extraction. For a simple extraction, we’ll use dental forceps to wiggle your tooth and pull it loose.
Impacted wisdom teeth require surgical extraction. Dr. Boyd will make a small incision in your gums, remove bone tissue to get access to your tooth, and pull it loose using forceps. If it’s easier, we may break your tooth and extract it in pieces. Afterward, we’ll stitch your gum so it can heal. Wisdom teeth extractions are often done using IV sedation along with anesthetic.
Expect a blood clot to form at the extraction site to expedite healing. Take care not to dislodge this blood clot, as it can lead to a painful condition called dry socket. Gum swelling, soreness and residual bleeding are normal after an extraction. Cold compresses on your cheek, pain medication and warm saltwater rinses can help relieve these symptoms.
