What to Expect from a Tooth Extraction Procedure

Dental Tooth Extraction in Denver CO Area

Dental injuries, untreated decay, and advanced gum disease can all result in the need for emergency tooth extraction. Sometimes, damaged or decayed teeth can be restored. Other times, the damage is so severe that the only recourse is extraction. At Urgent Dental of Denver, we offer affordable emergency tooth extractions to relieve pain and get you back on your feet. Dr. Drew Boyd is your go-to dentist for emergency tooth extraction procedures in Denver, Colorado.

What to Expect from a Dental Tooth Extraction

Just the sound of “tooth extraction” can put you on edge if you don’t know what to expect. But tooth extractions are not to be feared as they’re fairly quick, painless procedures. We’ll do what we can to save your tooth, but if the damage is beyond repair, it will have to be removed. Removing severely damaged teeth gives your mouth a chance to heal. In the case of oral infections, removing your tooth can keep the infection from spreading.

Here’s what you can expect from the extraction process:

  • Dr. Boyd and our team will evaluate your condition carefully to verify that the tooth needs to be pulled. If so, we’ll numb the afflicted area so you feel no pain during the emergency extraction procedure.
  • For a regular tooth extraction (one that doesn’t require surgery), we’ll loosen your tooth with dental forceps and pull it out from its roots.
  •  For surgical extractions (used when your tooth is impacted or fractured at the gum line), Dr. Boyd will make a small incision in your gum to gain access to the tooth, remove any bone structure that’s in the way, and then pull the tooth loose. If it’s easier, we might separate the tooth and remove it in pieces. Then we’ll stitch your gum so it can heal.
  • Once the tooth is out, we’ll place sterile gauze over the socket to stop any bleeding. That ends your procedure, and you can go home.
  •  A typical single tooth extraction procedure can take 30–40 minutes to complete. Multiple extractions will take longer.
  • The extraction itself is painless due to the anesthesia. However, you may feel quite a bit of pressure when your tooth is being pulled. This is normal, and there is no cause for alarm.
  • We’ll leave you with detailed aftercare instructions to help expedite your recovery. Full healing may take about a week.
  • If you experience pain or inflammation once the anesthesia has worn off, place an ice pack on your cheek or take OTC pain pills to relieve these symptoms.
  • A blood clot will form within a day or two of your procedure. This is necessary for healing. Take care NOT to disturb or dislodge it.
  • Rest as much as possible, eat foods you can tolerate, sometimes only soft foods, don’t smoke, and don’t drink from a straw until the extraction site has healed.
